Coral Disease at Hen & Chickens Reef

Показать описание
This video shows the high prevalence of diseased brain corals on a small reef outcrop at Hen and Chickens Reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The disease causes necrosis of the coral tissue and multiple lesions can be seen in the video. The corals that are completely white in the video have lost all or nearly all of their tissue leaving only the white, dead skeleton visible.

What is the cause and can anything be done for it?

It's accelerated marine corrosion (oxidation). The calcium and magnesium which make up the coral structure are metals which lose their electrons very easily and oxidize. Bleaching(whitening) is a result of oxidation. It will be primarily accelerated by other sources of EMF(voltage) in the seawater that setup galvanic couples with the metals(minerals) and then oxidize them as they lose their electrons. Temperature will have an effect but corrosion rates are primarily influenced by EMF in the seawater triggering galvanic and stray electrical current corrosion. It's the same corrosion that all marine vessels fight, but calcium and magnesium are the most reactive metals so they corrode more easily.
