Pakistan faces many security challenges, both within and along its borders. The Taliban maintains a stronghold along the border with Afghanistan; the conflict with India over control of Kashmir has worsened in recent months; and in December Pakistan suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in its history when Pakistani Taliban attacked a school in Peshawar, killing over 100 students.

However, some positive signs of change have emerged. The Pakistani army has ramped up efforts to combat the Taliban and other militants. Relations with Afghanistan have improved since Ashraf Ghani was elected president, promising greater security cooperation along the border. And US Secretary of State John Kerry is working to help India and Pakistan mend relations. Will these efforts be enough to ensure future stability? Pakistan expert Christine Fair will discuss Pakistan’s security concerns and the outlook for this complex region.

Speaker Christine Fair is Assistant Professor of Security Studies Program for the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Everything she said about Afghanistan is happening right now. Crazy. She’s next level. Much respect.

No one in the US must be feeling as disheartened as Christine Fair. To think each and every word of hers came out to be true after 6 years in August 2021, just goes to show that nothing every changed and everyone just cared for their own interest.

I remember a line from her book : 'While generally countries have armies, in Pakistan, the army has a country.'

Systematic rape was one of the chief weapons of the atrocity campaign. Any-where from 200, 000 to 400, 000 women were raped. Susan Brownmiller (1975), who published one of the earliest analyses of the event in her pioneering work on the politics of sexual violence, reported the following: “Rape in Bangladesh had hardly been restricted to beauty. Girls of eight and grandmothers of seventy-fi ve had been sexually assaulted during the nine-month repression. Pakistani soldiers had not only violated Bengali women on the spot; they abducted tens of hundreds and held them by force in their military barracks for nightly use. The women were kept naked to prevent their escape” (p. 82)." (Plight and Fate of Women During and Following, Routledge, Page 49)

Comparing Modi with the KKK might be a convenient and impactful analogy but it shows Ms Fair's less than perfect understanding of the circumstances that led to the Godhra riots.

Another very important point that Fair doesn't know. She says KKK is underground and doesn't have public acceptability. Is the implication that RSS doesn't have acceptability in a similar manner? That is totally false. RSS has a great deal of acceptability among the general public and many people love sending their children to RSS shakhas (meets and training camps). It is like a cadet corps program and masses (of Hindus of course) of people firmly believe in the nationalist through process of RSS.

I am surprised that it is only recently that I have heard Christine Fair speak. Clearly, her voice has been stifled in the Western media, as was proven fairly recently in her BBC interview. But she certainly speaks the truth from a position of vast and detailed factual knowledge.
