It chronicles the Heian era Genpei war between two samurai clans, the Heike and the Genji. The Heike are a powerful and corrupt clan and the antagonists of the story, while the Genji are an underdog clan who uproot the Heike.
The opening lines draw from the Buddhist teachings that nothing lasts forever, and the powerful will always eventually fall from grace. It describes the Heike clan, who were prideful and held power in the Heian era, but eventually fell to the Genji.
The same opening lines have since held the meaning of "the powerful don't last forever", however in Jujutsu Kaisen, Todo puts a spin on it and adds the line, "However, we Jujutsu sorcerers are the exception"
