when did he open ~/.profile and put in his variable

Instead of typing source you can just use type . .bashrc or just type bash return it and good to go. I close and kill the session and start new, I just press ^c return and it's quicker for me. Just anyone do what you feel comfortable with doing. And get very acquainted with shell scripting, because every computer or software hardware company needs people with a comprehensive understanding of shells, and things like why 255 is the max on certain things, args etc.
Very informative videos bud, I am refreshing my knowledge a little this week.
