Huh, when I heard about this story, I could have sworn that Hephaestus did want a bride, and Zeus chose Aphrodite for him. Less to honor Hephaestus and more to punish Aphrodite since she was a bit of a problem amongst the Gods. Not that it worked, mind you.

So... Hephaestus is somewhat like a foster-brother to Achilles, the natural-born son of Thetis. That would explain why he later forged magical armor to replace Achilles' original armor which had been stolen from Patroclus (masquerading as Achilles) after Hector killed him in battle. One thing I can't forgive Aphrodite for, if she felt neglected by her husband and was going to cheat on him -- or simply never agreed with Zeus' decision to marry her off to Hephaestus, couldn't she have picked someone more worthy of her love than Ares? That strikes me as purely a carnal affair, nothing to do with any feelings of tenderness. My sympathies will always lie with Hephaestus. After being betrayed by Aphrodite, and rejected by Athena, Hephaestus forged the KOURAI KHRYSEAI, golden automatons in the form of beautiful maidens, as his assistants. As Homer described them in The Iliad: "Hephaestus left his bellows, took up a heavy stick in his hand, and went to the doorway limping. And in support of their master moved his attendants. These are golden, and in appearance like living young women. There is intelligence in their hearts, and there is speech in them and strength, and from the immortal gods they have learned how to do things. These stirred nimbly in support of their master." They were beautiful and intelligent, but more importantly *loyal* and devoted to their creator -- so in a way, Hephaestus' ingenuity triumphed over his disappointment with the flaws of the goddesses.
