Did you know that the U.S. Border Patrol has special operations? Known as the Special Operations Group, it includes both BORTAC and BORSTAR.

BORTAC stands for Border Patrol Tactical Unit, and BORSTAR stands for Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue. Both of these elite units are highly trained and are capable of a multitude of things.

When I was on national guard border mission deployment in texas mexico border area, saw the bortac guys and State police swat fly in for an operation near my checkpoint. Was interesting, fields were thick and tall, when the rappelled into fields, did not see them after that. Saw maritime ops come thru the river on airboats and was allowed to do a ride along with them. Then Omaha-- the helicopter they have, did a ride along with us too. Basically it was just like a military operation. Good times !! Saw interesting things on the border then.

Currently at the academy now, definitely interested in BORTAC when the time comes. There’s also MRT which is similar to BORTAC from my understanding but I believe MRT is a station unit while BORTAC is a unit.

Thank you so much. The national security team has played an important part of my family life. Since I was a small child I had the safety of officers watching over me. My father served in Pearl Harbor. He was a guardsman. My mother born a presidential niece was appreciative of the armed services. She was best friends with Jackie Kennedy. My father raised roses for the rose garden next to the McKinley monument. My family always watched over us. I had the opportunity to see the search and rescue teams first hand. The caring they make for one child’s family. I have for the last few years been family support for CBPO. I wholeheartedly support the mission.

In addition to the national level BORTAC team, each Border Patrol sector has a Sector BORTAC team. The Sector BORTAC teams used to be called Sector Response Teams (SRT), with the exception the San Diego Sector team, which was called Regional Emergency and Crisis Team (REACT). CBP also used to have a team in the National Capitol Area called the Quick Reaction Force (QRF). I'm not sure if it's still active, but it was made up of guys from BORTAC teams, BORSTAR, and CBP SRTs.

I saw a video by Free Documentary on Youtube Episode One of Risk Takers. It was about BORSTAR. Never knew about them until that awesome video showing of what they do. That series is pretty cool, the intro music and visuals is top notch.
