Tbh, I think taking Patrick to a therapist or a psychologist would've helped him better than putting him in a mental asylum straight away. That way, he would've processed his trauma in a healthier way and he wouldn't become the incredibly dangerous person that he is.

Also, the way that Carter tried to warn Lois on the phone when he called her about Patrick didn't even seem in-character for him, especially when he sounded more "scolding and angry" than "scared, scolding, and angry." Knowing him and the terrible father and person he is, he was only acting like he knew about Patrick being "incredibly dangerous" because he knows he can't and doesn't want to afford to confront the fact that he chose to send Patrick away to a mental asylum and abandon him there since he was a child and never bothered visiting him, supporting him, checking in on him, or even telling Lois or Carol about him since he knew that the two would want to meet him and make him confront that fact
