Dr Iroise Dumontheil from the Centre for Educational Neuroscience explains Stop and Think, a neuroscience-derived school-based intervention developed by the UnLocke Project.

Using a computerised learning activity, primary school children were encouraged to “Stop and Think” when they were solving maths and science problems, especially while learning concepts that are counterintuitive; such as the fact that dolphins are mammals, despite swimming in the sea like fish.

Following a trial over one school term, Stop and Think led to an equivalent of 2 additional months’ progress in science, which was statistically significant, and 1 additional month’s progress for maths, which was not statistically significant.
