For quite some time we have all been talking about Indian youngsters making it big on the world stage. The first one has managed to cross the 2700 Elo and it is D. Gukesh. Born on 29th May 2006, Gukesh has achieved the feat at the tender age of 16 years, 1 month and 17 days. He is the youngest Indian player ever to achieve this feat and the 3rd youngest in the world after Wei Yi (15 years 7 months and 29 days) and Alireza Firouzja (16 years 1 month and 11 days). Gukesh has achieved it faster than Magnus Carlsen! The World Champion crossed 2700 when he was 16 years 7 months and 1 day old. And there was a pandemic in between where Gukesh didn't play any chess for nearly 1 year.

Gukesh is now the 6th Indian to achieve this feat after Vishy Anand, Sasikiran, Harikrishna, Vidit and Adhiban. He did so at the Biel Masters 2022 by beating Le Quang Liem with the black pieces. With this win Gukesh now has a live rating of 2704 and is world no.32. He is currently India no.4 behind Anand, Harikrishna and Vidit.

Enjoy this video and the historic game analyzed by IM Sagar Shah.

Correction: Magnus Carlsen had broken the live rating of 2700 Elo at the age of 15 years and 11 months in 2006. However, his published rating was 2700 in 2007 when he was 16 years and 7 months old. Taking this into consideration, we can say that Gukesh became the fourth youngest 2700 in the world.

Just to put it in context, Gukesh is 1 year younger than Pragg, 2 years younger than Nihal, 3 years younger than Arjun; still crossed 2700 mark ahead of others, truly remarkable achievement for Gukesh.

@ 9:55 Earlier, I also thought this was true.... but then I heard AG on Levy's stream...
He mentioned a very crucial point about it that these kids Gukesh Arjun Nihal Pragg Nodirbek keymer Nieman Raunak when were locked up at their homes during covid.... they were training all their very best at home... getting better day by day and hoping to play after the pandemic and show their actual potential.... but the numerous waves stretched the duration so long that when these hungry lions were unleashed to play in tourenys .... they went in search of pure blood...hunting down every 2400-2500s, even preying for super GMs....

And that made me change my mind... AG's words made a lot of sense.... the pandemic break strengthened these young guns hugely... like only a few players were able to make this large jumps in the past... the pandemic did help them and increased there efficiency by a lot....

Following Gukesh since his final match against prag in Gelfand open 2021, But since then his consistency is at next level. ALWAYS perform brilliant under PRESSURE.

During pandemic he did not play tournaments. Else he would have been youngest ever to reach 2700. As a chess enthusiast for 63 years and having wat hed games of Sri Manuel Aaron, I think he is playing great chess. Surely working with Prasanna and Anand in Academy definitely has helped his repertoir.

Magnus crossed 2700 at younger age than Gukesh on live rating. However, he lost a few points and was only able to achieve 2700+ on published ratings a few months later.
So saying that he’s faster than Magnus is a little too early.
Anyways, these comparisons are meaningless and a few months here and there doesn’t matter.

Biel open results show wrong in Follow chess Salem lost 1 game but show point 2.5 out of 3 and lead the tournament but actually Gukesh have 2.5 and Salem is 1.5 not 2.5 please Sagarji note it to the Biel tournament director to correct it.
