Off Grid alternative boatlife meets on grid luxuries best of both worlds sailing Shark Bay - Ep 142

There are very few affordable things about boatlife. However, delving into nature's larder to catch your own food is one of the highlights. During our stay in Shark Bay we felt embraced by the community. Not only were we able to enjoy the comforts of Monkey Mia resort but we were also invited for a cruise around the bay on Aristocat 2 to see some of the 10 000 dugongs that call this area home. On top of that Rob and Ivan got to spend a morning learning the art of cockle farming.
Special mention goes to Rob who made us a memorable meal with the cockles he and Ivan harvested.

Much love to you all,
Rob, Rachel, Finn, Declan, Ivan

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.

Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.

Glitch in the matrix! Apologies for a couple of little glitches in this episode. It doesn't take away from the story but is a bit frustrating.
As always, thanks to all for your time watching and special thanks to those who help keep our boat afloat by supporting our creative process. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee.

Ivan might consider a career in front of the camera. He seems so comfortable and natural and such a great personality. He must be a really good sport too. Thanks for producing this great channel.

Next time it’s a it too salty you might want to try getting a raw peeled potato or two and cooking them for a bit in the sauce/soup as they will absorb some of the salt. They you can pull them out

Here in Florida we call our sea cows "Manatees" (mAn-a-Ts)...hopefully that helps with sounding out our name for them. We have such interesting names for things and places here...not always easy to pronounce, even for us native Floridians.

Rob and mechines, maritime equipment, or....just stuff. Always some new classic to add to the historic collection his antics. Getting close to a full length video for "The Best Of..." category 😁😁😁

Always so handy to have that life-size cut-out of Ivan to help fill in while making some video clips. Maybe some day your youngest son, Ivan, will also find his way back home...hahaha 🐒

That bucket of cockles made me hungry. Time to raid the cabinets. Wonderful video, once more! You guys always brighten my weekends 🎊🎆🎉🎇

You must be super educated about dolphins now! Rachel was cautious about tasting and was rewarded with regret!

Hi there. Yes we all like our comforting! Glad you didn't have to deal with Australian government agencies again! And good to see Rob's cooking skills continue to impress. Shame about the salt shaker!
I'm currently self isolating in my caravan in Hawkes Bay awaiting results of a Covid test after a possible exposure and symptoms that may or may not be cold symptoms. Good old Omicron is getting round!

Another great video! I love to see that funny boy Ivan being his funny self. And, I love watching Rob fix anything but food; would some Patreon please send that man to a culinary class? Some seasoning restraint seems to be in order.
