Muscle Car of the Week Video #102: 1974 De Tomaso Pantera GTS

#musclecar #v8tv
Produced by Kevin Oeste and V8TV Productions, Inc. -
This week we stretched the definition of muscle car just a bit and bring you a 1974 De Tomaso Pantera GTS. The muscle car connection is this car's 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 that looks over the driver's shoulder as you row through the ZF gear box. Power comes from Ford, wrapped in Italian styling. We know it is not a muscle car but we think it is very cool and worth sharing. From The Brothers Collection.

Wow, what a gorgeous example of a 1974 De Tomaso Pantera and with original mileage below 800.
One for my dream collection !
In my opinion, this particular car is more desirable then a Lamborgini Contach .
❤️it !

When I was in college, one of my team mates on the varsity fencing team had one of these that he bought used (in 1980). It was loud, fast and gorgeous, and I’ve wanted one ever since.

I was a teenager in the early 70's. The Pantera was by far my favorite car. $$10 grande.

It may not be a muscle car in the technical terms but with that great sounding 351 Cleveland V8, it's still a bad ass car!

This was my dream car I had a friend whose father had one he used to lend it to his son and we used to go cruising loved the sound the engine was right behind you it felt like a race car and it sounded like a can am car and it was fast, but it overheated easily still one of my old time favourites Thankyou!

Pantera was a beautiful car, we welcomed them to our Shelby club shows, as one of the Ford family...you should have spent more time talking about the engine, you know there are several versions of the Cleveland even in Mustang /cougar guise, you treat every RCODE 427 like it's the only one of its kind (and yes I love Rcodes) yet you treat this 351 C like it's dirt. If memory serves me right, Pantera cars came with the highest output non BOSS 351 C4V available in any given year, so you could have covered the changes from closed chamber to open chamber heads and such....

As a kid riding around in this car was great same color as this one. Didn't take it out a lot as i remember the cobra 427 was the go to car to have some fun in

Awesome car! have always been fond of European styling coupled with the Detroit iron; very cool transaxle ZF (and the gated shifter!!) Just for fun, check out the 1967-71 De Tomaso Mangusta, especially in racing trim, sits much closer to the road

we used to ride our bikes up to a mercury dealer here in nj back in the 70s..  they just came out with these cars.. we thought they were so cool looking..  good old days.

The gov't safety rubber bumpers ruined the looks of so many cool cars back in the day.  I always thought the Pantera was special, thanks for sharing Kevin.  Also enjoyed watching the webcam the other day at your shop, as the cars on tour rolled by.

Oh overheats, the right window gets stuck in the up position,
The numbers on the engine block match the VIN number. I was really impressed with that car. It has a way of shutting you down the street. And with a little work the 351 can be brutal. They were about nine brand new. Which was $3, 000 more than the Corvette.

I love my 1971 Pantera that I’ve owned since 1998. Learn more about the Pantera at Pantera Place.

I love cars like this, I don’t care where a car comes from or what’s under the hood; I’m all about character

I remember walking through the showroom when they were new, price was around $10, 000.

Why take it out in the rain? Would be better if those front vent windows opened, or weren't there(strange european "feature".) Odd that the side glass is not frameless. Car sits higher in the back - is that correct/stock? Original tires?! Yowsir.

The Pantera was also meant to fill a gap left by the dearly departed Cobra... a lightweight, foreign sportscar with a Ford V8 and a performance suspension. Like the Cobra, the Pantera competed with foreign exotics of its day, like the Lamborghini Miura and the Maserati Ghibli. But the Pantera was 1/3 the price. When I was a kid, I remember thinking that Ford was just trying to recapture past glory by offering an Italian Cobra. I was an idiot. I didn't realize how much car the Pantera was, especially during a time when great sports and muscle cars were vanishing. I'm a little less of an idiot now, and it's really nice to see a prime example of the Pantera in such beautiful condition...
