Victorian Street Children (Hungry and Homeless Kids in the 19th Century)

Street Urchins and Guttersnipes - Victorian children, alone or in gangs on the mean streets of Britain's towns and cities. Homelessness was endemic in Victorian Britain, but sleeping out on the streets wasn't limited to adults, in the 19th Century children could also commonly be found wandering alone, or in gangs for safety – equal victims to poverty, having being sent out to work at an age little more than babies to support their parents, either to buy food or drink, but they also found there way onto the streets from broken homes or abusive parents; indeed, some were orphans, though many had homes, but that life was so bad that the cold and lonely streets seemed preferable. However they found there way onto the streets (either by running away from trouble at home or having been sent out to work or beg), they were forced to grow up quickly, become street-wise and learn to survive in a mean and dangerous world. You will hear a contemporary account of street children by a late 19th Century author concerned with child poverty. He wrote in order to bring attention to the destitution they faced, describing various types (as he sees them) of street children and giving a narrative of conversations with some of them; one story telling why a girl found herself alone on the streets, and another tale describing what happened to a boy, found cold and alone by a lady outside her home.

The story about poor little Tom just pulled on my heart strings. I am so happy he ran into that wonderful woman to look after him.❤️ Thank you for the visual story telling about Victorian life!

Terrible times. The child mortality rate for children under 5 in 1800 was 329 per 1, 000 births (1 in 3 died), 228 in 1900 (1 in 5 died) with many survivors enduring the brutal conditions described. In 2020, the mortality rate was 1 in 4 in (1 in 250 died). I think it's very difficult for people to visualise the despair and destitution of Victorian society, so I think your research and narration of these personal accounts is uniquely valuable. Thank you.

That ended so sweetly. I cried a little. Thank you for that, and all the stores you have narrated.

Another brilliantly narrated account of the hardship faced throughout history in London ❤️🇬🇧, the story of little Tom at the end was very heartwarming but sadly was the exception. What human’s can survive it astounding.

To think this is what was going on when both sets of my grandparents were born.

Kids today have no comprehension how hard life used to be. Up even until the late 1960’s early 1970’s…

I'm a history teacher but not a very sentimental type of man; however, I have a daughter who lives with her mother (we're not together), and after listening to this I felt compelled to text her "I miss you." Just to remind her that she is wanted and loved.

Good storytelling, but the sad part, is that here in america, the homeless situation is grim. A building for low income seniors was so bad, they evicted them all with nowhere to go because of the mold. Evil in my opinion, should have got them housing first. I live in a cold state, and not much time until snow comes. The conditions in california are awful, you think they would have low income housing, because many are working homeless. Many more will be homeless i fear with the cost of everything going up. G-d bless, love the video's, and awesome story telling ability.

If i was well off in those times i would have had a house full of children mostly from the street, it's so heart breaking to see all these beautiful children with nobody to love and look after them. I wonder if people did take them in? i could not have not helped them if i was able.
