Emmylou's gorgeous rendition of Lucinda Williams' Sweet Old World, seems as though she is singing to her mentor and probable lover, the late great Gram Parsons, father of alternative country. First gaining recognition, with Lee Hazelwood produced International Submarine Band, Gram joined the Byrds for their switchto country with Sweethearts of the Rodeo album. With the Byrds Chris Hillman,Gram formed the unsuccessful Flying Burrito Brothers, which mixed country with good old fashioned rock and roll. going solo for his last two albums, Gram recorded a gorgeus duet wtih Emmylou, Love Hurts, on the posthumously released Return of the Grievou Angel. Though not a star in his lifetime, Gram has since become a legend and an influence on many musicians.Joining Emmylou on this album are Lucinda and Neil Young on backing vocals, Also gorgeous harmonica solo by Neil.

I was lucky enough to see Gram and Emmylou perform together just a few months before he died. That night I fell in love with both of them.

I have been a fan of Emmylou since I heard her sing with Gram Parsons, especially "Hickory Wind.'

The first I heard Emmy Lou was in DC... I was a kid, around '67 or '68. I snuck into a club to hear the music. Later, around '71 or so I bought a Gram Parsons album because I knew he had been with the Byrds or Flying Burrito Brothers. He taught the Stones country and they taught him heroin and he died. Sad.

Their duos showed a love that was real. So it does not matter if they had sex. They loved each other. I cannot listen to Boulder to Birmingham without feeling the love and the loss.

He was a genuine good person raised in tragedy, deception and substance abuse. His childhood taught him that true honest love was not possible. Yet he knew that is what he felt for Emmy and it scared him. Also he was married, and he had been a heroin addict. I know that he loved Emmylou because you can see it in the pictures and hear it in songs like She, Grievous Angel and others. You can’t tell me Tom Brown wrote Grievous Angel. Gram wrote it about Emmylou and his decision that the future of his life and his music was with her.

How right you are; this song was written by Lucinda Williams, about a friend of hers, who overdosed on Heroin. It was never written about or for GP & Lucinda wrote it approx. a decade after GP's passing, Tho' this song is quit fitting for Emmylou to sing with GP in mind, There is no greater song written about the loss of the Godfather of this new L.A. Country/Rock/R&B, fusion; than Emmy's "Boulder to Birmingham". One of the greatest songs of the 70s, no doubt, a goose bumps song, very touching.

2018 completed a dream for me, I pent the night in room #8 at the Joshua Tree Inn, , made a trip to Capstone in Joshua Tree where he was half cremated, in 2017 I went to Metairie La. to visit his plot, so sad, I tool a red cross, he should have got his wish, cremated and let the wind take him where the four winds blow, his grave sight in La. is so sad, as far as I am aware, none of his family is buried there If you ever get down that way stop by his grave, give him the recognition he from Alabama
