More historical aviation videos please! As a pilot this was a true gem.

As a pilot myself, I enjoyed the history.
A little more info for you if you wanted to know:
As mentioned in the video, we actually still use gyros today in the cockpit. We use them for the Attitude indicator(referenced as a 'artificial horizon' in the video) as well as the DG(Directional Gyro/Heading indicator). Those gyroscopes are powered by the vacuum pump from the engine. Another instrument called the Turn Coordinator(tells us how fast we are turning, and if the plane is aligned in the sky) uses gyroscope driven by an electric vacuum pump. The reason it's not driven by the engine vacuum pump is in case the engine fails, and we are in clouds. If all of our instruments were driven by the engine, we couldn't orient ourselves and we could crash.
Nowadays, everything is becoming electronic. Instead of having gyroscopes behind the instruments, the computers use accelerometers like in your smartphone to determine the position of the airplane. The advantage of this is that even if the engine fails, as long as we have battery, we still can read the normal instruments. We still have to have backup instruments though, which are sometimes gyroscopic and sometimes electronic.

5:20 – Dude just casually ducks under a spinning prop. People in early aviation were fucking nuts. 😂

A great invention, but as a retired airline pilot I can tell you lack of hand flying skills is truly troubling for me. A vast quantity of new hires have marginal hand flying skills.

What's the first solo piano piece used for the soundtrack, please?

thanks for uploading this fascinating documentary. please allow me to place a request here, because i hope that many aviation fascinated persons might see it: years ago i stumbled on a documentary about autopilots and gyros. they tested the autopilot on a big plane and everything worked perfectly in the beginning. then right before the landing the plane suddenly altered it´s course and they thought the autopilot is broken, but as it turned out the autopilot was correct and just did this maneuver to correct for windspeed, turning of the earth and maybe even other parameters and did find it´s way perfectly to it´s destination.
maybe someone has seen this video and kindly posts a link here? i would appreciate that, thanks a lot in advance. i´m going to post this in other videos as well for increasing the chance of positive feedback. thanks again and greetings from austria :)

Just as navigation is important in the air, the same applies when drilling for oil underneath the earth. For those of you in the oil industry, the name Sperry is also well known. Sperry partnered with a Japanese oil company called Sun to develop gyroscope technology for measuring the angle or inclination and the direction of oil wells. That company came to be known as Sperry-Sun. It was later bought by Baroid, who was later bought by Dresser Industries, which finally merged with Halliburton. And today Sperry-Sun, or just Sperry is the directional drilling division of Halliburton. Fascinating.

Artificial Horizon is now called an Attitude Indicator. Other than that, fantastic video and very accurate.

Title is wrong. This isn’t how autopilot was born, no computers or flight management system was ever mentioned in the video. Gyroscopic instruments are not autopilot.
