It's sad not just for the loss of life but also culture and history. Now they are forced to go back to digging up what little is left to hold that up as their cultural heritage. A lot of what's left is actually outside of China; art, artifacts, and culture brought to America, Taiwan, and South Asia before or during the revolution.

I'd say with the cultural revolution it was less about young people running things and more about the "in" crowd running things. Maoists were running things who happened to be young people.
Such an explosion of populism nearly happened in the US after the American Revolution but before the Constitution, the mass anarchy was why the Constitution was written and new strong central government was formed.
And it did happen in France during the "reign of terror".

French Revolution from 1791-1795 is the most comparable & to add that France was at war with the entire continent of Europe (and won)

The real China died that day look at the Shaolin temple it became a tourist attraction, not a Buddhist spiritual order.

I think we need younger people in Politics in the USA, but when I say that I don't mean college students, I mean people in their 30s and 40s, maybe 50s. And this is why people who are too young shouldn't have power. They simply don't understand the entire context of what they're doing, or the long term harm it will cause.

I thought Mao always had control of the Red Army, and in fact he subdued the Red Guards by means of it.

French revolution. Mao's cult of personality saved the party. Whether the Gang of Five was actually calling the shots.
