Thank you for this video, Joey. I've been saving it for when I start my second novel. It's been super helpful and I hope I do my character justice. Keep up the good work!

Yes research is so important! I have been reading some really great books lately that have great research attached to them!

Thank you for this. I have a few different disabilities and still get nervous writing about my own disabilities, as I know the experience can be very different as someone with the same disabilities as me. I get nervous of inadvertently offending someone. I love the idea of using sensitivity readers.

I definitely agree with writing more than one disabled character instead of a token one. Disabled people tend to make friends with other disabled people over shared experiences and circumstances as well as their regular non-disabled peers and interest groups. Their conditions may also be genetic so they could be interacting with disabled family members too. Having a character ask about their disabled friends' mother is no different to asking about the wellbeing of family members for non-disabled friend characters ^_^

I really HATE it when a disabled character is in the book just as a token. Or their part of the story is completely about their disability. Love your video!

You’ve given me some food for thought Joey. As a confession I already have a novel out, and my main character has a disability personally I feel I did a good job the whole way through, by having the awareness but not the over emphasis about it. But now I ponder as it has had very little readership, no reviews I’m revising it for a reader magnet, but I wonder if I should cut that part out altogether???

"...or alll three!"
Me: YES!

Sensitivity readers and beta readers are the best thing that ever happened to the writing community.

But I am an alien race. Lol. I'm kidding, that's just branding. 😂
