Water Vole Facts - The European Water Vole - #Shorts

Water voles are the biggest species of vole that live in the UK and can weigh up to a whopping 350grams. In some parts of Europe they live away from water but in the UK they are mainly found living in burrows alongside freshwater rivers, streams and ditches. They mainly eat leaves, grasses and aquatic vegetation and have to eat around 80% of their own bodyweight each day!
Each female water vole can have between 5 and 8 pups at a time and can breed up to 5 times per year. Water voles can live up to 3 years of age but the average life expectancy is less than 12 months and remarkably, around 70% of all water voles die every winter!
