Augmented Reality Application and Theory using ARToolKit and Unity
Показать описание
In this tutorial, basic Augmented Reality theory and an example of Augmented Reality Application has shown, which is developed using ARToolKit and Unity Game Engine. It Android, iOS, Windows and Mac supported. Augmented Reality (AR) is a process of superimposing text or any information in visual form over a real world video feed. A 3D Model named UnityChan has been used on this video. Essential links-

Augmented Reality Applications
Augmented reality (AR) is the latest revolution in the technological sector that superimposes virtual reality over the real world environment. The current augmented reality technology deals with live computer generated imagery that is enhanced using various computer software applications. For example, a person might wear transparent glasses or view a screen equipped with a camera (like cell phone device) where they can see real world environment as well as virtually created computer generated imagery.
In today's world, augmented reality applications uses three kinds of displays. They are:
1. Handheld devices such as smartphones like iPhone and android phone.
2. Head mounted display that can be worn on head or affixed onto a helmet. Some of the examples are HUD (heads up display) helmets worn by fighter jet pilots and the prototype of Google Project Glass.
3. Spatial display that uses projectors to display computer generated imagery onto certain surface.
AR has evolved so much that now it has been put into use in a wide field of applications. Ranging from gaming industry to modern warfare, augmented reality plays a pivotal role in enhancing viewing experience or assisting the user. Let us go through some of the applications has been implemented.
Air force - in air force, fighter pilots uses HMD (Head Mounted Display) AR technology that can display various data such as jet speed, altitude, horizon line, etc. right on their helmet's visor. The pilot doesn't even have to look at the various instruments on the jet's dashboard. That's why it is also referred as HUD (Heads up Display). This can help them to concentrate on the battlefield and plan their strategy accordingly.
Education - there are several mobile application developed that can give description, facts and figures of the historical monuments or structures. The user just has to point their cell phone at that the monument and all the facts and figures will instantly be displayed onto their cell phone screen.
Information - there is an iPhone and android app called layar that displays various real-time information such as ATM, Gas Station, Cinema, Business, etc. that is around the user on the cell phone screen. Furthermore, by clicking on a particular point of interest, the application also delivers the best route to reach there.
Apart from above, there are several other applications where AR technology is used such as medical, gaming, advertising, entertainment and much more. However, the technology is still evolving and who know how far it will get enhanced.
