I consider myself lucky to have owned a Thomas Mercer chronometer for over 40 years. I extensively tested its accuracy decades ago and found it to be very good. The watchmaker from whom I bought it in Aachen advised me not to let it run, saying it was a pity to promote inevitable wear and tear. As a student, I paid for it in installments. The watchmaker didn’t ask me for any security for the unpaid installments. He believed that someone who buys such a watch will reliably settle their debts. And that’s how it turned out. I doubt there's still such a practice today.
