In this exciting episode, we delve into the rich, untapped potential of the Campaspe Deep Lead—an ancient river system in Victoria that holds hidden gold deposits just waiting to be discovered. Throughout the Victorian gold rush, prospectors flocked to more accessible goldfields, but the deep leads of the Campaspe River were only found and mined up to a certain point. Now, with modern technology and a greater understanding of Australia’s geological history, we have the chance to uncover what 19th-century miners never could: untapped alluvial gold in the Campaspe region.

The Campaspe Deep Lead is a treasure trove of information about how ancient rivers, tectonic movements, and sediment deposition shaped Victoria’s gold-bearing landscapes. In this video, we explore how the Campaspe River system, which connects to the mighty Murray River, played a critical role in depositing gold-rich gravels deep beneath the surface. As the river changed course and was influenced by events like the Cadell Fault uplift, vast stretches of gold-laden sediments were buried under layers of clay, silt, and gravel, creating a hidden landscape of riches beneath our feet.

What makes the Campaspe Deep Lead so fascinating is the fact that stacked paleochannel deposits—remnants of ancient river systems that transported and sorted gold over millions of years, exist here. We take a deep dive into the Calivil Formation, which played a key role in forming the well-sorted gravel beds that make the Campaspe one of the most promising untapped goldfields in Australia. The Calivil Formation, laid down during the Miocene to Pliocene, represents a time when rivers were powerful, high-energy systems capable of transporting large volumes of material across the landscape. These rivers deposited well-sorted gravels, which are perfect for trapping gold and other heavy minerals in the lowest layers of the ancient riverbeds.

In contrast to the well-sorted, high-energy rivers of the Calivil Formation, the Shepparton Formation, which lies above it, represents a very different geological environment. Formed during the Pliocene to Holocene, the Shepparton Formation is characterized by poorly sorted lenticular gravels—deposits that were laid down by low-energy, braided river systems. These systems spread their deposits across wide floodplains in patchy, lens-shaped formations, making it much more challenging for miners to follow gold-bearing leads. The gravels here are mixed with finer sediments like silt and clay, making it harder to pinpoint exactly where the richest deposits lie. But the real secret of the Campaspe Deep Lead lies beneath these layers, where the ancient, powerful rivers of the Calivil Formation deposited their treasures in well-sorted channels that have been preserved for millions of years.

In this video, you’ll learn about the unique geological processes that have shaped the Campaspe River system, including how different sediment layers were laid down over millions of years, forming a stacked layer of deep leads. From the well-sorted gravels of the Calivil Formation to the braided river deposits of the Shepparton Formation and the even deeper Renmark Formation, each layer tells a story about how rivers once flowed through this region, carrying gold and other minerals with them.

We’ll also delve into the cutting-edge techniques being used today to locate these deep leads. Radiometric surveys, which detect the natural gamma radiation emitted by potassium, thorium, and uranium in the earth’s surface, help geologists map out buried sediments and ancient river channels.

If you’re passionate about gold prospecting or fascinated by the geological history of Australia, this video is a must-watch. We’ll take you on a deep dive through the Campaspe River system, exploring how rivers shaped the land and deposited the gold-rich sediments that remain hidden to this day.

Thank you so much for watching!

Note: I made a mistake when describing the feet in the Renmark formation. I accidentally wrote the same measurements as the Calivil formation. It was meant to say 656-1968 feet. Whoops! I literally watched this video twice last night and it still snuck through. Bugger!

As soon as I saw the title, I imagined OzGeology breathlessly talking into his phone to make the episode while running out the door with his bucket and spade.

This vid makes good sense to me. I used to work at an Nt gold mine, one of the geologists said there is more gold still in the ground than has ever been dug up in aust. The really big deposits are buried very deep he said, that are from very old water courses..

This is great stuff and the narrator is excellent.
I'm a gemologist and gem and gold prospector and love this stuff.
Keep up the great work 👍

Hey OzGeology, the more you show Australia, the more i want to visit your beautiful country! (when i turn 65) Did you find any more wire gold around your home? A fan from Nova Scotia, Canada, Great video! ( over 2500 old gold mines here!) Mostly hard rock, Quarts! Cheers, my common-wealth Friend.😃👌👍✌

G'day, l found this Video very interesting as some testing of the Campaspe basin area has been going on mainly drilling and core sampling, Fosterville Gold mine to the South of this lead is now producing a high volume of fine Gold from rock, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

Tis grand to watch what's available to read the ground now, says an old ex-gold prospector. Living in Castlemaine, there are so many places I never got to explore properly.

I heard about a Chinese company buying lots of land north of Bendigo years ago, with intentions of digging for gold. Did they ultrasound our land and see something beneath? I often thought this.
