you can get around the EPERM issue with chroot by making your test executable a suid binary (it would of course need to be owned by root).

What if you're accidentally tricking the compiler with symlinks though? I could imagine a scenario where e.g. you have a library installed somewhere by a package manager, but another program expects that library in another location, so you use symlinks to make both of them happy. This happens all the time with .so files in my experience, although I can't remember it ever happening with source code, but it's not inconceiveable.
