Today is Threatened Species Day so this year we are celebrating one of Australia's most iconic threatened species the Koala. Our region is notable for having some large Koala populations, such as in Taree, Harrington, Port Stephens, Hawks Nest and nearby coastal areas.

To celebrate Koalas in our region, we've brought you a series of presentations from leading Koala experts and special guests describing the many intriguing attributes of this species, the threats to their survival and how you can help save this species from possible future extinction.

Hunter LLS and Mid Coast Council are developing a post bushfire Koala Action Plan for the Mid Coast region of NSW in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust, NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment - Biodiversity and Conservation Division, Forestry Corporation NSW, Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and Mid Coast 2 Tops Landcare Connection. This plan will identify conservation management actions at priority sites; providing a voluntary framework for land managers to undertake conservation activities to assist Koalas after the severe impacts of bushfires in the region.

Hunter LLS will be delivering bushfire response programs in the Mid Coast to support Koalas, and other threatened species and habitats, to recover after the fires.

These programs will also support landholders for on ground efforts guided by the Koala Action Plan and other Threatened Species post fire planning happening now, more information coming soon!

This project is supported through funding from the Australian Governments National Landcare Program and Mid Coast Council, through the Bushfire Wildlife and Habitat Recovery funds.
