My dad is a native. When I was little we would go to visit family and walking through the city was a breeze. My dad would just barrell through crowds and make way for us to pass. Those people with the cameras would try to get pictures and he was so intimidating he'd ward them off on the approach.

#1 NYC rule, be rude be rude be rude. Ignore people who speak to you, look away, even if you make eye contact keep walking, shove through people if necessary. You gotta do what you gotta do.

In SF at least when I lived there. Guys gave out music all day and never asked for money. They wanted to heard. Most of the time it was worth buying.

There's a very successful jeweler in NYC. As a tribute to the recent death of his beloved grandmother, he attempted to hand out one hundred thousand dollars in one ounce gold bars. People just walked by or avoided him like the plague. Now I know why: the scams. 💰
