As more businesses and events open, we want you to be safe attending them during the pandemic. Our travel guru, Michelle has some helpful tips when it comes to traveling right now.

There’s still a great deal of confusion surrounding safety precautions to follow when traveling. We’re bombarded with lots of mixed messages even in the media. Although COVID is retreating and the numbers are reduced, travelers must still continue to take precautions to stay safe and healthy on the road.

Even under normal circumstances, in pre-COVID days, I was a germaphobe on steroids. When the pandemic hit, I was bouncing off the wall and in a survival mode. My anxiety level soared sky-high when my condo flooded and I had to leave my safe cocoon to check into a hotel. For the past 5 months, I’ve been a “Hometown Tourist” in my own city ever since the flood and have been a guest at Sonesta ES Suites.

Just selecting a hotel can be a challenging dilemma. Take extra precautions by being prepared and limiting your exposure. Before I checked into Sonesta ES Suites, I checked out of two other hotels because they were not practicing proper COVID protocol precautions and I didn’t feel safe. It’s important to find a hotel with a separate air conditioner in each room to avoid inhaling recirculated air that’s been shared with other guests.

These are some of the COVID safety travel tips that I’ve practiced and learned from my experiences navigating through the pandemic.

Below are Sonesta ES Suites Covid-19 procedures in place at their hotels. They serve as good guidelines to follow and use them to make sure that your hotel is following these procedures.

Common areas are sanitized every hour
Guest Laundry/Fitness Center/Business Center – Access controlled by the front desk in order to ensure that social distancing is enforced and sanitized after each use

Masks are required in all common areas for all guests
Employees are required to wear masks/gloves
Grab & Go Breakfast daily to encourage Social Distancing
Each room is sanitized after each guests departure
COVID TRAVEL KIT FOR FLYING & ROAD TRIPPING

Whether you’re flying or driving, keep a COVID TRAVEL KIT handy. Assemble and carry this with you containing these essentials:

Extra masks
Hand sanitizer
Handi Wipes
Paper towels, napkins or tissues
Your own pen
Gloves
Face shield
RESTAURANT

Make sure the restaurant staff is wearing gloves and masks. Most importantly, you don’t want a food handler touching your To-Go containers if they are also handling money and credit cards, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for cross-contamination.

FLYING & AIRPORT SAFETY TIPS

Boarding an airplane these days is like being on a big flying Petri dish. Being confined to such a small space, you just don’t know what you’re going to be in contact with and come home with. Follow these tips and you’ll have a smoother, less stressful and safer flight.

Keep your drivers license in a Ziploc baggie when going through security screening.
Carry your own pen and avoid using a public pen at check-in counter
Avoid touching door knobs or handles with your bare hands
Do not under any circumstances place your carry-on bags beneath the seat. This is one of the worst things you can do. That area is filthy and full of disgusting germs like E-coli and Staph germs.
A large plastic shopping bag will come in handy to protect your carry-on bag from germs in the event you don’t have a choice and are forced to stow your bags under the seat in front of you
Use the bathroom prior to boarding flight
Wear a mask and face shield for extra protection and to avoid touching your face
Use Handi Wipes to sanitize your seat area including the serving tray and armrests
