Overseeing the superlaser gunnery crew, Graneet’s excitement turned to dread when he discovered the weapon’s specifications, but he convinced himself the Empire would never fire on a populated world. However, the obliteration of Alderaan and it’s two billion inhabitants by his own hand shattered Graneet’s conscience. Realizing he had become the galaxy’s largest mass murderer, he feared execution should the Rebel Alliance win the war. When the order came to fire on the Rebel base at Yavin, Graneet froze. Paralyzed by fear and guilt, he frantically ordered his crew to “stand by” in the hopes something would save him from his duty. His brief hesitation gave Luke Skywalker the moment he needed to deliver the fatal blow to the Death Star, fulfilling Graneet’s desperate wish.

Read the novel “Death Star”. Graneet didn’t “freeze” when he received the order to pull the lever on the superlaser. He intentionally waited by saying “stand by” a number of times to give Luke the few seconds he needed to destroy the station. Also, Graneet was already unhappy about the Death Star when it destroyed the prison planet of Despayre when the superlaser was being tested.

Volunteering to serve aboard the Death Star? I was led to believe only a few people knew about the Death Star. The 501st was loyal and was assigned to it and only the best and brightest were given this secretive posting where I assumed they’d be blinded and transported to the ship where they probably never saw the entire scope of the station or knew of its capabilities. I mean I assume the gunner for the Death Star is much like the crew of the Ebola Gay. They have no idea what they are piloting or releasing
