Say what you will about the booking decisions, overall writing of the show, as well as long-running angles, and production values... the dagger in the heart of WCW programming was the AOL merger. With the merger, WCW programming on TV was canceled. In its waning days, Nitro was pulling in a 1.99 to a 2.05 rating with Thunder doing about 1.45 to 1.65. These numbers are comparable to Raw and Smackdown today. If TV programming was intact, no doubt WCW or a form of that organization would be in existence today. Television networks are clamoring for viewership in these numbers mainly for revenue from advertising! But no one was going to purchase WCW's debts, lawsuits, or Time-Warner's big name wrestler contracts however. So Time-Warner decided that they should sell it along with its assets and video library soly.
