Hitogami managed to kill Orsted lots and lots of times. Orsted goes back in time with his memories everytime he dies, hence why he knows the world by now. That would imply he died a lot, it could be either Laplace or Hitogami's doing.
And based on the side story, it is confirmed that Hitogami is the one who had had his apostle separate Laplace's soul into 2 parts, which made him evil.
Not only that, all humans except for summoned ones actually love hitogami through a curse, so he could make a lot of people do his bidding.

Fun fact, orsted admitted in the novel that if rudeus focused on getting stronger he think he couldve eventually found a way to kill him. He states this in the novel when explaining why he'd rather be friends with rudeus rather than an enemy
