Most of the churches in Finland are open to freely visit. Visiting historical churches is actually a pretty popular tourist thing all over the Europe.

Highly recommend going to Suomenlinna. Ferry goes from that harbor market you walked past. If you want to see a rougher, "non-touristy" side of Helsinki, go to Kallio friday night.

My Dad was head of the Geological Museum in Helsinki (which used to be right next to the cathedral) and a taught geology at the University until his retirement. He wanted to popularise geology his entire career, and the use of rocks in buildings was one of his favourite topics. So... on his last day at work, they actually hand washed a decent chunk of the cathedral steps with his colleagues and students. 😅 With permission of course.

He passed away a few years ago, but your video brought nice and warm memories from my past. 😎

The music video for Darude Sandstorm was filmed on the steps of the cathedral. Enjoy Helsinki

Alexander II was known to be the only truly respected Russian emperor in Finland, and after his death as a victim of assassination, the Finns really missed him. The erection of that statue in his memory in the Senate Square speaks volumes for it.

Alexander the 2nd freed slaves in Russia and strengthened Finland's autonomy. He also supported Finnish identity, language and culture. However regarding Finland, he was also complex and questionable leader, as many historical (or present...) figures are.

You should visit Turku too. Tuomiokirkko is not fancy but much older (from 1300 or something like that). Castle of Turku is nice place to visit too, full of history. And archipelago is very unik, there is no archipelago like that nowhere in this world. Literally thousands of islands. You can hire bike (or sailing boat) or car and make some 2-3 day trip throug islands.

You don't need to be scared of cops in Finland. Generally they are very friendly.

That one building was Kansalliskirjasto (aka the National Library of Finland). Greetings from your friendly librarian in Pello.

I used to drink with my friends at the tuomion kirkko basement. It’s a massive closed off cellar with tables, brick walls and such.
We shouldn’t have been there tbh.

When you're on top of the stairs looking down, on the left side the yellow building has bomb damage from WW2 on it's stone base (the building where the oppressor Boprikov was killed a zealous nationalistic Finn). On the opposite side is the University building, which was also in flames in WW2 due to Soviet terror bombings on Helsinki 1939-1944.

Often Americans are fairly easy to tell apart from normal people. But your way of wearing the label USA and the flag makes it even more simple. Thanks for your consideration for the public safety.

Welcome to Helsinki! There's a lot for you to explore. Korkeasaari Zoo and Suomenlinna fortress and the amusement park Linnanmäki are some examples
