Making Soft Jaws For The Big Vise

I needed a set of soft jaws for the big vise. The set I made for the small vise are okay. I think I can improve the jaws and make them easier to use. 😁😎

Great idea. Now I know why my father saved stuff I thought was junk. Soft jaws out of old threshold scrap is a great bit of American ingenuity. Thanks.

Nice small project. It was a joy to see someone who understands that files cut best in the forward cut. I can hear Mr Redwood berating any of us in metalworking classes 50 years ago that dragged a file backwards and forwards.

Good idea. I have a little vise in my shop that scratches up my tools I am restoring. I think I have some of that from when I redid the landing. Stay safe and healthy. Thanks

From a heavy equipment guy, I’ll take rod bearings out of large Diesel engine, hammer them flat, and makes pretty good material for soft jaws for the vise.

Very good idea! I think I got rid of all my aluminum stuff but if I ever get to craving a set of soft jaws I'll go out to the ACE and get a couple of feet of 1 inch or bigger if they have it, copper pipe. I can double it after I split it and have a little extra for a set of 5 inch jaws. But all is safe for the present. Thanks for the tip, Unc! GBWYall!

Old aluminum fan blades work well. They also make a pretty good center finder.

Too bad Copper has gone insane price wise, it always made nice looking soft jaws. 😃👍

Version 2 generally is a big improvement to the original, because you have seen all the things you did wrong the first time. The biggest exception is software design (Google 'second system effect'). Those jaws should work great for all but the most delicate stuff (in which case you should wrap the part in a towel or rag anyway...). I should make myself a pair of those, especially now that I have the vise mounted to a table with bolts (and not held down with a couple C clamps). I don't know how often I would use them, since I have mostly used that vise cranked down to death-grip levels...

I made custom Brass Jaws for my Craftsman Vise, my Wilton has Copper Jaws that someone else put on it (came out of Pontiac Motors), I don't even have steel jaws for it and My Grandfather's Farm Anvil/Vise has Smooth Jaws screwed on that he made (those vises don't have replaceable I really don't have the need for those *Abusive Jaws* that Destroy my work but if I did I can put them back on my Craftsman in about a minute, which I never have done since I made the Brass Jaws probably a decade ago.
