When Arnie says "Why?" he was probably talking to Christine and probably the detective as well. As messed up as Arnie looks, it kinda makes you feel like he was thinking, Why did you do this without me? I thought we were inseparable??

Nice detail here in Keith Gordon's acting; every time he looks at Christine, his personality shifts. He starts off confrontational, then sees Christine and falters, looks at her, is abrasive and tries to leave to get the parts, then looks back again and he's quiet and meek. Like Arnie's real personality is bleeding through one last time but Christine keeps asserting her control over him.

this movie had an awesome cast, great story by King, and amazing direction. It is one of a handful of films I consider perfect.

The musical score to this film is haunting, utterly great.

The book goes into much more detail about Arnie becoming possessed by the spirit of Richard LeBay. While Christine does possess him (as it did LeBay), in the book Arnie fights the possession to a degree and every once in awhile fights through and even begs for help as he is aware to some degree that the evil spirit is taking over. When Arnie says, "Well all I know is..." his voice is actually softer and more meek (like Arnie has come out for a second), then his voice hardens because like LeBay, he doesn't give a shit that Darnell is dead and he covers his tracks with "All I know is I've got a Cadillac full of parts...". Then, moments later, Arnie comes out again and you hear him softly say, "Honest Mr Junkins, I don't know what's going on here". I could be reading a lot into it, but in the book Arnie is a victim of the possession and does try to put up a fight to stop it, before ultimately succumbing.

I think that's very hard to convey in a movie, but I feel like they tried some in scenes like this one.

Always felt bad for movie Darnell, if he has just stayed in his office he would have been fine. Unfortunately he came out and saw Christine all burned up and driving by herself and she had to kill him to keep that secret and protect Arnie.

Harry Dean Stanton was great in this movie.

Wait a second…

He’s great in every movie he’s in.

When Arnie asks “why?” He’s not asking Junkins why is Darnell dead, he’s asking Christine why did she kill him. Very subtle there.

Also, I don’t know how Christine saw him as a threat, Darnell, despite his derogatory nature was good to her and Arnie. He gave Arnie a job, and Christine somewhere to stay. Who knows why she killed him.

I never knew Jason Mellon from Back to School owned Christine.

Have the DVD with all the deleted/alternate scenes. This was one of them. In the (I believe) alternate scene Junkins brings up his first encounter with Arnie about the paint he "used". Found no record of the purchase he got it from. Brings up Moochie's death again & gives Arnie a threat to come clean before he finds out for himself, even though Arnie has cast-iron alibis on the night of the killings.

I havent read the book but I always pictured Arnie asking christine why and not the officer

The reason Christine killed Darnell was to provided an alibi for Arnie. Therefore, legally, removes Arnie from suspicion and places Darnell as the likely killer. Means, motive and movement. All to protect Arnie.

Fun Fact: The original casting choices for Dennis Guilder was Kevin Bacon, Arnie Cunningham was Scott Baio and Leigh Cabot was Brooke Shields. It was a creative decision to cast unknown actors instead.

This is the last time we see even a hint of humanity in Arnie. Next time we see him at New Year's picking up Dennis, he looks like a vampire and is a full blown psychopath

Kid had an airtight alibi. That cop was stumped. Arnie was truly scared here. Not like their first meeting. Lebay was possessing Arnie at that time.
