It's probably been pointed out. But in case any one is wondering where the US was here's some clarification
1:The US was NOT cool with France in Mexico
2:We had the Monroe doctrine that stated we would not tolerate European power re-establishing or expanding territory/colonies in the ENTIRE western hemisphere
3:The US was in a civil war from 1861-1865, we could not intervene, after 1865 we were busy rebuilding but we sent weapons to Mexico

1:So yes if the US wasn't in a civil war, it's very likely we would've intervened and helped Mexico kick France out
2:I believe Abraham Lincoln sent a letter to Mexico congratulating them on their victory at the Battle of Puuebla

What happened to France in Mexico is exactly what happened to the USA in Vietnam in the last century, and what is happening with the USA today in Iraq & Afganistan: You simply cannot impose your will against the wishes of a whole country. The Brits and the Soviets know it as well. They both tried to conquer Afganistan and failed. Politicians however, never learn from history.

Map may be a bit inaccurate. French were in the town of Matamoros on the Rio Grande. They were in a position to help the Confederates at the battle of Palmito Ranch where the Frenchmen served as Confederate Artillery in that particular battle.
