Using a Bore Gauge

Bore Gauges are an affordable entry into precision work. Bore Gauges can be set to an object of a known width, a comparison between the known width and the bore itself can then be made. This video demonstrates using an outside Micrometer to establish the target bore size. Any difference less than, or greater than the zeroed indicator is your actual bore size.

There are many methods for measuring a bore. Bore Micrometers for instance require less practice to use effectively, but they only cover a small range of measure. For repeated measurements, a Bore Micrometer is a clear choice for the ease of use. The cost of covering the same range as this Bore Gauge set (.7000" to 6.0000") would be a considerable investment.

If you are considering entry into precision measuring, a Bore Gauge Set and Outside Micrometer Set are a sound investment. Adding in a Gauge Block Set is also a great way to accurately combine the use of all three sets of tools to calibrate one another.

I hope this video helps get you started , like anything as a Machinist, we learn as we go.

New to the channel, great video. I have the same bore gauge (511-733) however, I'm missing that measurements sheet I can still work without it but it's a lot of unnecessary trial and error. Could you please post a scan of that page (even a photo will do) here or the video description? I can't find that anywhere, not even on mitutoyo website.

Would you prefer the analog or the digital version from this bore gauge from Mitutoyo?
