Football As'soc'iation + 'er' = soccer ... some guy who liked shortening words like brekkers for breakfast and ruggers for rugby(dont know why he thought that was shorter) ... made the word soccer from football association ...

@zalien6 Brits? its the rest of the world !!! ... its only Americans, Aussies and Canadians that call it soccer, while the rest of the football playing nations that call it football, not just Brits ....
the word soccer was invented just coz Americans made their own version of football even if they use their hands for 99% of the game time and the ball is the shape of an egg and for some reason found it reasonable (which the rest of the world find it amusing) to call the game American football
