More than 400 years after Goa was colonized by the Portuguese, India finally took over Goa from Portugal after an Indian boat was shot by the Portuguese and an Indian fisher was killed. This set off a mobilization of tanks and ships to Goa. The Portuguese fought to the end, but the odds were against them. Goa officially returned to India in December of 1961.

Fun Fact : when India tried to evict Portugal out of Goa, Portugal tried to impose NATO article 5 on India, since Portugal is a NATO country. But the rest of the NATO nations just didn't bother to go with that decision and ultimately the decision was overruled
