One person was killed and 12 people remained trapped more than 1,000 feet underground inside a tourism mine in Colorado.

The equipment malfunction that caused the incident happened at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, according to a Facebook post from the Teller County Sheriff’s Office.

The 11 people who were rescued consisted of two children, as well as the deceased, but police have not released any information on how the person died.

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office said that about 500 feet into the mine, a malfunction occurred in the elevator system and created a "severe danger" to the people who were on board, Fox 21 reported.

Rescue efforts are underway, according to local officials. The mine is located in Teller County, east of Colorado Springs, near the town of Cripple Creek.

God help them. I'm a claustrophobe, and it kills me to think of what they're going through.

Back in the winter of 1969, my husband and several others entered an abandoned mine right outside Colorado Spring, CO .. DId I agreed to go in the mine.. OH NO! not me. I waited outside till he and the others came out of that mine. He explained to me that there was places in that mine with big holes and that they like to have fell in.. People dont realize how dangerous this could be. I hope they can safely return to the surface. My husband was killed at work in 1987, I bet is he maybe he is watching from above us all. RIP Jim

Who cares about the Govs party affiliation. This press conf is really not helpful, if I was a family member I’d be freaking out.

My best guess is the cable snaped and what's called the "safety dogs" deployed. It brings the cage to a verry abrupt stop. This mine takes 2min to get to 1000ft or roughly 27 feet per second. The cage at normal speed travels quite fast. Serious Injury will occur if the safety dogs were to deploy at that speed.

Before you pat each other on the back so much for political reasons, get the people out first.

The man who died was a great man and an even better father. He will truly be missed by us (his family).

People don’t die from a malfunctioning elevator unless it falls. 😱

Emergency reasons be nice to have a small two man basket they could lower down for inspection of the damaged equipment or deliver supplies

It is too early in this bad event to label the Governor's party affiliation. Cover the story first, delve into that detail MUCH later!

Hopefully they get them out soon. When we went on that tour the tour guide said there was other mines connected to into this mine maybe they can walk out through one of those other mines.

This sheriff is one of the most professional spokesman during an event that I've seen. They're lucky to have him.
