One person was killed and 12 people remained trapped more than 1,000 feet underground inside a tourism mine in Colorado.
The equipment malfunction that caused the incident happened at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, according to a Facebook post from the Teller County Sheriff’s Office.
The 11 people who were rescued consisted of two children, as well as the deceased, but police have not released any information on how the person died.
The Teller County Sheriff’s Office said that about 500 feet into the mine, a malfunction occurred in the elevator system and created a "severe danger" to the people who were on board, Fox 21 reported.
Rescue efforts are underway, according to local officials. The mine is located in Teller County, east of Colorado Springs, near the town of Cripple Creek.
