When i started karate it was just for fun and to get a bit of exercise (i was and still am overweight, not massively fat but a big girl). That's 20 years ago now. I had to change dojo a few times because of work, but i just kept showing up, training at least 2 times a week. I was very proud to get my black belt after 13 years, i feel like it's earned even though I'm not as fit as many and I've never competed. Now I'm coaching beginners at my dojo (which is non commercial btw). I'd never try for a 2nd degree black belt because I feel that wouldn't be fair. But sometimes I wonder how these strong young guys will do in their 40s with added responsibilities and an aging body...

Problem is many students can never reach your level of technique no matter how long and diligently they train. Schools still must ultimately reward those students with black belts.
