Palestine warns of 'humanitarian, health catastrophe' in Gaza

The Palestinian health ministry has warned of a "humanitarian and health catastrophe" in Gaza. It has urged countries and rights groups to assist with urgent medical and emergency aid in the blockaded enclave. The UN has launched an appeal for almost $300 million to help reach some 1.3 million people across Gaza and the West Bank. Nearly half that amount will fund food aid. Crucial supplies to the region have been running increasingly thin, after Israel declared its "complete siege". The region's only power plant ran out of fuel earlier this week.

Hamas, which Israel helped to fund and build for more than a decade (Israel wanted to use Hamas to counter Yasser Arafat's Fatah party), before later admitting it was a bad idea But by the time Israel realised its "mistake", Hamas was placed in a position of power. Palestinians are paying an awful price for Israel's "mistake".
