How Can I Keep From Singing?

Words: Attributed to "Pauline T."; Music: Robert
Lowry; Arrangement: Sally DeFord and James Loynes.
"This is one of those beautiful old folk-type
songs that I have just been aching to arrange for quite a long time....
it was inevitable that we (James Loynes and Sally DeFord) ended up playing with it. It's a lovely expression of gratitude, joy and hope.
The lyrics seem to have first appeared in "The New York Observer" in the
mid-1800s, and the setting by Robert Lowry has since become a favorite standard hymn."

My pastor saved my life. He brought me back to my faith in Jesus Christ and God. Ever since, this has been my theme song. Ever since he retired 8 days ago, I have been listening to/singing this song nonstop. It helps me keep strong and helps me to help my church through this transition, because we are all in this together.

This was like the theme song at my Uncle John's celebration of life last July just three weeks before he died from brain cancer. He was actually my great uncle, but I loved him soo much. He was a choir and drama teacher and director at Lancaster Mennonite Highschool. Uncle John, please tell Jesus hi for me and that I can't wait for the day that I come to be with Him.

We were singing this to my friend when she passed away last week.

Kudos for being one of only two out of five versions I've heard so far that actually sticks to the original words.

I was introduced to this song on an Eva Cassidy CD several years ago. She had a powerful voice like an angel. Her recording is the 'Pete Seeger' version with slightly different words in some of the verses. This version that reflects Christ's presence will be sung at my upcoming wedding.

THANK YOU FOR THE LYRICS.  THE IRISH SINGERS DON'T QUITE KEEP TO THE TUNE.  THANKS AGAIN, I WILL WRITE THE WORDS & KEEP THEM CLOSE.

I first heard this hymn at a funeral.  It is beautiful.  We can give thanks in all things even in the loss of a loved one.  We give thanks for a life well lived.

THANKS for sharing, this is my first time to hear. I repeat it. Besides the Amazing Grace, I love the tune and lyrics.

We sang a slightly different version of this at my little brother's christening, nearly 6 and a half years ago, now. I've always loved it, and it brings back so many memories.

I heard this for the first time today and it is very haunting and beautiful and also very sad, but not really sure just why.

I love this song. I want it for the last song at my funeral! Our choir sings the song, but a different version.
