2013 Chevrolet Captiva video walk around, Crossover SUV review

In this video, I do a walk around review of the 2013 Chevy Captiva, that we rented for the weekend to go to EL Paso TX.

In my personal experience with small engines, no mater how many horsepower they have, if they have little torque, they are going to keep down shifting with the slightest touch of the gas pedal. On the other hand if you drive a big V8, the mpg will be bad in town, but out on the Highway, they will cruise effortlessly, and will climb most grades without downshifting, saving you gas in the long run.

So my Verdict is: if you randomly make a long trip, and mostly commute to work, in city traffic. A 4 Cylinder is perfect for you.

If you like to cruise on the highway at high speed, get a German Car with a Big V8 or a V12, if you will keep it under 100 MPH than an American V8 Sedan will do just fine.

What I want to know is why you're driving at 90-100 MPH with your 3 year old in the car. Jesus Christ, man.

Obviously going 90 mph in a compact suv won't get you 30mpg. Driving 60 will

Driving 90 mph is not normal driving by any measure. Do you really expect good gas mileage with those speeds?

Based on your comments I see the issue. the EPA rating (not GM) is based on a driver cycle using 55MPH highway.. not 80-95. misleading. I recently rented one and am considering buying one I got a chance at. It got about 30 MPG highway doing 60 MPH on the highway, over 1200 miles.

Big difference in fuel economy from 60MPH to 85MPH.

This was my very first review, and it sucked. I've been driving BMW's for about 15 years, and that doesn't happen on BMW's. My old 740iL had a 4.4liter V8 rated at 22HWY, if I drove 75, which is the speed limit, I would get 24MPG, but if I drove 80, 90, or 100. I would still get the 22MPG rated by the EPA. Now I drive a 525i with a 2.5 inline 6 cylinder rated at 28HWY and same story on that one. I would like to thank you for your comment, and for sure next time I will drive more conservatively.

I must admit I have a lead foot and hate driving slow. So what would the proper speed for this vehicle would be? I'm used to driving BMW's, so I kind of expect the same performance out of every car, but I know that's wishful thinking. All BMW's I have owned if I drive the speed limit I usually get 1 or 2 mpg better than the EPA rating, but there has been times when I drive all the way from El Paso to Phoenix without falling under 90 mph and still get what the car is rated for.

Thank you very much for your comment. I appreciate all comments, positive or negative. The thing is every German vehicle I have driven, does not do that. Maybe a 1 or 2 MPG difference, but that's it, and if you drive them normal, you get 1 or 2 better than EPA estimates.

Yes, and the funny thing is that just a couple of months ago. I test drove the 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan, over the same stretch of road, and drove it the same, or maybe even a bit faster. The VW is rated at 21mpg city & 26mpg Hwy. but was I surprised after I did my calculations and got 24.5 MPG. Not sure why, but maybe German vehicles are geared more for High speed cruising.

Did he try the eco mode? I have one of these and it does average around the 28 mpg rating on the interstate (speed limit in my state is 80) with the economy mode on

Dude how are you gonna say its bullshit!! You were doing 85!!! You dramatically reduce mpg at that speed!!! The wind resistance increases causing more power to propel the car forward!!! Please no more bad reviews!!

It doesn't just look like an old Saturn Vue. It is in fact, an old Saturn Vue. When GM shuttered Saturn they had thousands of Saturn Vues in surplus. They simply pulled off the Saturn badges and some minor trim and replaced it with Chevrolet badges and trim. The didn't build these to be sold as Chevrolets. That is why they were fleet only vehicles. When they ran out of surplus VUEs, they were done for the U.S. market.

Also, the EPA ratings never, ever factor in 80-90 miles per hour. There isn't a car made that will achieve it's advertised ratings at those speeds.

That said, these can be pretty good values on the used car market.

55 mph...you mean like a normal driver like me that gets the full 28? And it IS a Saturn vue. Chevy bought the leftover cars and rebranded

The only reason you did not get 28 mpg is becasue you were driving way over the proper speed. another reason you didnt get the milage they claimed is cuz you drove you and your family, with the things they had which weighted it down, and also driving over hills and mountains.
