The decline of the Delhi Sultanate was due to a combination of internal and external factors:

1. **Weak Successors**: Many rulers after the peak of the Sultanate were weak or ineffective, leading to administrative inefficiency and internal strife.

2. **Noble Rivalries**: The Sultanate faced constant power struggles among nobles and factions, which weakened central authority.

3. **Military Defeats**: Repeated military defeats, including those by Timur in 1398, severely impacted the Sultanate’s stability.

4. **Economic Issues**: Continuous wars and administrative mismanagement drained the treasury and weakened the economy.

5. **Administrative Challenges**: Corruption and inefficiency in administration led to loss of control over the vast territories.

6. **Rise of Regional Powers**: The rise of regional powers, such as the Bahmani Sultanate in the Deccan and the emergence of the Mughal Empire, challenged the Sultanate’s dominance.

7. **Religious and Social Discontent**: Discontent among local populations, including both Hindus and Muslims, contributed to instability and unrest.

These factors collectively led to the weakening and eventual collapse of the Delhi Sultanate, paving the way for the rise of the Mughal Empire.
