Quantum Computing at Room Temperature? Not So Fast.

Today we talk about raisins. Yes, raisins. Quasars with dark matter halos, pink diamonds, the last moments of a dying satellite, a new type of qubit, maybe, how to measure the length of the day with lasers, a new treatment method for brain cancer that’s got something to do with quantum mechanics, whether climate change drives migration, and of course, the telephone will ring.

10:00 Sabine dropping the F-bomb was not something I expected today. 😂

I nearly fell off my chair when I heard, "because fuck those penguins." 😂

Like the raisins, I noticed the same effect at a bar in college. They served a blueberry beer with fresh blueberries in it. They floated up and down, and I immediately knew what was going on. My friends at the bar got a kick out of it and appreciated bringing a physics major along! 😂

The thing I don't get about quantum computing is the input, output and what calculations are being made.

I always add raisins to my ferment, its always enjoyable watching them rise and fall slowly after they get rehydrated!
It happens quite regularly with all kinds of solids inside fermenting liquids

9:59 is the best Sabine quote I’ve ever encountered.

"It .. dropped down from the sky. A fate that will be familiar to many graduate students" -- that hit too close to home. I'm still hanging in there, but it still resonates with me lol

i'm so spoiled by such feats of computation i was partly expecting the raisin thing to result in 3d printing a raisin with controlled wrinkles that would produce a predictable rotation during its up and down journeys 🙂

I just love your sense of humor. The penguin bit got me. Thanks for another informative video.

Yes, yes, I know it's not aether, but I love how the earth spinny gyroscope thingy smelt just a bit of Michaelson and Morely ;-)

Hiya, I like the quiz idea! Definitely made me pay more attention. Some feedback: it's a bit slow in general when clicking to go to the next question, and the feedback is slightly confusing - the ticks and crosses vs red and green isn't so clear. Hopefully that's configurable on the app for you guys. Thanks!

10:00 I was listening to this in the background and was like “What did she just say?” 😂😂😂

"...because fuck those penguins..." 🤣🤣🤣 That quip was worth the price of admission. I'm still laughing.

I was going to do some quantum computing at room termperature---but then things got really busy at work. So I only do quantum computing at minus 125 C instead.

I had to laugh at the paramagnet story having potential to store information. Ever wonder why the file that is created when a program crashes is called a "core" file? One of many anachronisms in the computing world (along with "carbon copy", "dialing a number", and my favorite - the little symbol on the menu bar of your program that means "save" - it looks like a 3.5" floppy. Which of course, wasn't floppy at all. A nested anachronism).

You covered the raisin research with a straight face... Impressive.
