Happy Birthday Melissa Manchester!
Manchester was born February 15, 1951 in the Bronx. She studied songwriting with Paul Simon and played clubs in Manhattan where Barry Manilow discovered her and introduced her to Bette Midler. As a member of the Harlettes she provided backing vocals for the Divine Miss M. Releasing her first LP in 1973, she did not find her first radio hit until 1975's poignant "Midnight Blue", a #6 pop hit. She co-wrote "Whenever I Call You Friend" with Kenny Loggins, who chose Stevie Nicks to sing duet with and that tune peaked at #5 in 1978.
Arif Marden is responsible for the mint fresh pop sound that brought Melissa into the 80's with an energy that revitalized her career. Gone were the earth mother dresses and long hair of "Midnight Blue" and "Don't Cry Out Loud", a sleek and glamorous Melissa was ready to claim the charts even though she was not certain of her ability to make it happen. Her misgivings about the song led her to be "dragged kicking and screaming into the studio" (her words not mine). It was not her first uptempo pop song, she had recorded Lisa Dal Bello's "Pretty Girls" in 1979 and it peaked at #39. Once it was released, it shot up the charts and garnered her a Grammy for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance in 1983.
She took a lot of heat for "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" back in 1982. the song was written by hit songwriters Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow and was first recorded by Charlie Dore whose biggest hit at that point was "Pilot Of The Airwaves" in 1979.
The inspiration for the song came from "She Loves You" a #1 pop hit from the Beatles. The team felt that they could rewrite "She Loves You" and make it a modern version. The trouble came from critics who claimed that her version copied the arrangement of the Olivia Newton John juggernaut hit "Physical". Those two songs did mix very well into and out of each other at the clubs, but honestly I don't feel that it infringed any copyrights. There was grumbling, but Manchester had the last laugh as "You Should Hear.." peaked at #5 and #8 disco/dance.
Players on that record were Jeff Porcaro on drums, Steve Lukather on guitar, Larry Williams played the sax and Robbie Buchanan handled the synthesizers and rhythm arrangements.
In addition to her singing career, she delved into acting and appeared in the film "For The Boys" and the TV show "Blossom".
