The first time I heard this was at the Mann in Philly. I've never heard a crowd so quiet in my life. He had all of us eating out of the palm of his hand and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. I was a brand new father and was so moved that it became the lullaby I sang to my son for the first year of his life. I can't think of another song as profound as this one.

I lost my wife back in 2012. No she didn't die. We divorced. I can honestly say that I messed it up and lost the love of my life. When I recently discovered this song I realized The Avett brothers described the dynamic of our relationship. Unfortunately she didn't love me forever.

This song almost saved my past relationship. She introduced it to me while we were together. I didn't understand nor appreciate it at that time but after I made a grave mistake and several months later, I tried to use it to help understand her mindset before and after the break up. She was LOVE. I am HATE. I couldn't accept the love she had always offered and now I suffer for it. When we tried to amend it, I was too weak to let go and move on when I was the one who did all the wrong. Listening to this song makes me wish I would have understood it before I hurt her the first time. Idk why I strayed away but every waking moment I regret it to the fullest extent. I'm sorry Alexa. You were the one for me.
