Gerald Finzi - Clarinet Concerto (Op. 31) - Second Movement - Adagio

(From an Amazon reviewer): "For the price of a cheap concert ticket you can risk buying a disc like this knowing if it isn't any good, you've not really lost more than an evening's listening. And, if it is as good as this you've got a gem of a CD introducing you to a composer who you might otherwise never hear.

In this work, there are moments of darkness, moments of depth (surely this recording should mean more live performances?) but the lasting impression is more of joy and, 'Englishness'.

Elgar lies behind this music, as does Vaughan Williams, Holst and Parry - and a whole host of English music teachers (all honourable!). Finzi isn't making cheap copies, he has a voice of his own, a voice with a very strong sense of place and time.

The performances in this recording are fine - Robert Plane's clarinet sings lyrically and the Northern Sinfonia under Howard Griffiths' baton giving a breath of fresh air to this neglected repertoire."

I took these images in the Derbyshire Peak District at Christmas 2009.

The clarinet and score were made for each other. Even without the well-chosen pictures, the music is richly embedded with its own images. Beautiful.

Interesting that you chose winter scenes to accompany this music. It has always been associated in my mind with snow - I first really fell in love with this movement while listening on headphones travelling home from work by bus during the snows of January 2010. Normally I commute by bicycle, but the snows made it quite treacherous. Somehow the snowbound scene from the bus window seemed to resonate with this wonderful slow movement.

It is nice to know there are others in this world that think as highly as I do of Finzi's work. AntPDc, you are doing God's work.
