I've played around 45 hours with it and it exceeded my expectations by a lot. In my opinion it is a much better game than what the internet discussion suggests about it. Even most of the reviews are "it is a fantastic game but it is not RPG and the combat does not give XP, 7/10", which is really strange to me, like most people cannot simply measure this game on its own but looking at how it differs from a 16 years old game.

It is mainly an adventure, puzzle, collectathon game with beautiful graphics and music, clever and funny writing, charming story and characters and tons of unique ideas.

I personally loved the logic puzzle aspect of the combat (especially the bosses) and never got boring or frustrating to me but I can understand if someone feels different about it because it is really unusual and definitely not for everyone.

I am honestly sad that this game gets so much hate on the internet and there isn't really any discussion about it on r/papermario, only memes, because according to my experience with it it definitely does not deserve that. Not the best game of all time of course, but definitely something that adds much value to the Switch library and it's easily worth its price.

Just wanna say how tragic it is that Alphadream shut down. There's no Nintendo handheld exclusive series I wanted to see on the Switch more than the Mario & Luigi series. I've always preferred those games over the Paper Mario series.

I still miss Mario RPG on the Super Nintendo. That was the GOAT of the series.

Speaking as somebody who’s absolute favourite game of all time is Thousand Year Door I can honestly say I’m really, really liking Origami King

I fell in love with paper Mario, my first game was in n64 and I remember I played the whole game about 3 times. The story line and open world exploration was amazing. After that I played the one on the game cube and then also the wii one. However, paper Mario 64 was ahead of it’s time. So much you can do.

Why can’t they just make another proper RPG? This is their third attempt at this new mechanic and no one likes it. I also hate how there are no unique characters. Every toad and other character is the same model. I seriously don’t get what’s going through their minds during development.

This franchise has basically become Pokemon with every new entry being, "Oh well maybe next time we'll get the game we want" super disappointed but I expected this to be a let down with those battle mechanics.
