Columbia University Protesters Defy Order to Leave, Risking Suspension

Student protesters continued to stay at Columbia University’s West Lawn beyond a 2 p.m. deadline to clear out, defying warnings that they will be suspended for breaking multiple school policies.

The standoff marks an escalation in tensions at the university over a pro-Palestinian encampment that was established more than a week ago.

On April 18, Columbia had called in the police to clear protesters for trespassing on its grounds, but that move made students dig in and re-establish their encampment. It also inspired similar sit-ins and demonstrations at other schools across the country, including Harvard University, Yale University and the University of Southern California.

The New York school is now seeking to clear the latest encampment ahead of commencement, scheduled for May 15.

As a parent of college grads, I made sure they lived at home, acquired zero debt (while they paid for their own tuition), and made sure the professors never influenced them in any way other than the subject they were teaching. All the while making sure all the classes they attended were for earning their degree. Now I have 2 children with great jobs, are engaged and we can’t wait for grandkids.

I attribute it all to my wife being a stay home mom and raising our children with a strict, but loving environment.
