As much as I love Plagueis and hope that Snoke turns out to be him, I can't go along with this and now see why Disney summarily un-canonized the novel that it comes from ("Darth Plagueis") from being canon.

Plagueis HAD to be dead by the beginning of The Phantom Menace because of the Rule of Two.
Both Sidious and Maul were Sith Lords and there are always only two a Master and an Apprentice. Maul was the Apprentice and Sidious was the Master meaning that Sidious had to have killed (Or at least THOUGHT he killed) his Sith Master Plagueis while Sidious was the Apprentice before the events of Episode 1 in order for Sidious to become the Master and to have Maul as his Apprentice.

It gets a little lost in the movie plot, but I always thought it was kind of implied that Anakin is actually the son of either Palpatine or Plagueis

In Episode 1 it was literally said by Anakin's mother that he has no father, she just got pregnant, Jesus-Style

In Episode 3 Palpatine tells Anakin that Plagueis could manipulate the force to create life

this is such a glaring overlooked plot element, but I don't think that was coincidental
