It's loud, it's fast, it's striped. And it's making hot-rodding hot again. An artistic expression of drag-racing culture, the hand-crafted 1934 Ford Coupe known as Saint Christopher must be doing something right. Crowned 2023 Hot Rod of the Year, the 331ci Hemi-powered masterpiece is a polarizing pinnacle of perfection with its intricate gold-leaf striping, dummied mechanical fuel injection, hidden Holley EFI, and cleverly-placed radiator.

Nicole ventures to South City Rod & Custom to meet with Bill Ganahl, the only person who could pull off Coby Gewertz's idea for his holy hot rod, unraveling the theory and method behind their design and cruising the Patron Saint of Travel through the California country side.

MORE ABOUT BILL GANAHL:
Son of the late magazine editor and hot-rodder Pat Ganahl, Bill owns and operates South City Rod & Custom in Hayward, California, full production shop specializing in complete custom builds.

MORE ABOUT COBY GEWERTZ:
Coby grew up spending Sundays at the drag races. Now with a degree in graphic design, he has made a career designing Hollywood movie posters and ad campaigns. In his spare time, he created CHURCH, a brand merging his two greatest passions: the customized classic automobile, and his relentless appetite for high quality design.

I think I say it often but Nicole's enthusiasm is infectious. You can really tell she enjoys the vehicles and the craftmanship. And watching them trust her to drive their vehicles is really impressive.

"I suspect that he's seen it." I love that you said that, Nicole. I've read so many articles by Pat Ganahl over the years. HIs son did a really great job, and I am sure that his father is pleased.

You don't need any stereos in a car when they sound like this. This thing makes bad ass music.

The mention of -Rod & Custom- magazine brought back memories. I subscribed to it 1957-1961 (and still have most of those copies).

Billy has one of the best shops in the country, with a very talented crew. They helped us complete our magazine (HOT CARS) project car a couple of years back and did a fantastic job!

love it or hate it, you can't deny it's a gem of a car. I personally love the car, unique in a sea of hot rods that all look similar! Excellent work. The way Bill drove it for the burnout!!! No fear, none! "is that your fingers?! Ugh!" LOL

Now that what a hotrod supposed to sound like, that's a badass machine and a very unique look. Just the sound of that motor would make me want to drive it everywhere all day long. Thanks for the show Nicole, I really enjoyed the ride.

I judge at the pismo show and the second I saw this car I fell in love with it. Gold Class Winner 23! Seeing it in person is an experience. Absolutely brilliant. Great video and I am jealous.

That was cool.
You both looked like two kids in a candie shop. The smile and nodding head of Bill says it all. All I can say is this was your best one yet Nicole. 🤗👍👍🤔

Yea!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 What a great episode and a beautiful “Hot Rod”. 60’s and 70’s were my hay days for that paint style. Many of us with our V8 hot rods know very well how you feel between gears hearing that sound. Gets the adrenaline flowing huh? I look forward to every episode 🫵🏻👍🏻♥️

Love it. A beautiful video that captures the sound and feeling of an amazing hot rod. Incredible workmanship in all of the details. Love to see it rolling too and not tucked away in some garage. What a blast this would be to cruise the strip. The paint job very wild, I dig all the louvers and hiding modern FI inside the old school housing.

When I was a little fella 5 decades ago this is what hot rodding was all about.
Thanks Nicole for bringing us this fine time machine to savour and the team that spent thousands of hours is no less deserving of an awesome accolade. ✔️👍🏻😁

A bolt on parts catalog and a credit card are one thing. But people that spend untold hours in forethought, design and planning, then hand fabricating and fitting things together until they mate and function perfectly understand the time and tediousness involved in the process. Only these people can have a true appreciation for the finished product. Well done to you all.

A message to Nicole's husband. I am highly envious sir, well done to you as well.
