In 815 BC, Dido was the queen of the Phoenician city of Tyre (located in Lebanon) who fled tyranny to found her own city, Carthage (located in Tunisia).
Aeneas was a Trojan hero who settled in Italy and is the ancestor of Romulus and Remus (the mythical founders of Rome).

This story is from Virgil’s Aeneid and is said to be a foreshadowing the Punic wars between Carthage and Rome.

Rest of the passage:
Those watching let out a cry; Anna rushes in and embraces her dying sister; Juno sends Iris from heaven to release Dido's spirit from her body. From their ships, Aeneas and his crew see the glow of Dido's burning funeral pyre and can only guess what has happened.

Title of the painting: The death of Dido by Joseph Stallaert

This passage is my favourite from the Aeneid, very sad and moving... in the poem Aeneas really loves Dido but he must fulfill his destiny first and can't stay. Dido before killing herself regrets the abscence of a child of her own.

He left her and she was heartbroken. Girl couldn't take it anymore 😭😭💔

Terribly sad when love crosses that thin line. If one must be heartbroken let it happen where they have a view like that, the artist created an inviting sky and sea. Thank you Ms. Mae ✨

Aeneas was Trojan nobility. It was prophizied he would found a nation that would be greater even than the Greeks. Him and his father were a few of the only survivors from the fall of Troy.

One of my favorite operas, too. Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. Dido’s lament is so heartbreakingly beautiful.

Fun Fact:

Dido from the Aenead and Jezebel from the Bible were sisters. Both of them are claimed to be the daughter of King Ithobaal I of Sidon.

Please- a moment of silence for the loss of a baddie :(

What makes me sad is the anguish, loneliness that the paintings
show that isn’t tolerable to whose left behind and what has
driven them to rectify that fact that they won’t/can’t live without love
or the lost one that they love. ♥️💔😔

Your Chanel is one of my favorites ever. Your expressions and silence make it even more intense. I am an artist and I am learning more on this Chanel than I ever did in art history class.

Yes! I just finished reading the Aeneid and saw this painting for the first time a couple of days ago, Dido ending her life was so against the fates her soul wouldn’t leave her body, She was too good, and I still can not believe Aeneas just denied them being married, also I really like your channel =)
