Perfect reason as to why staff NEEDS to have a break area completely isolated from patients and their families.

The absolute hardest thing to do after losing a loved one is to not resent others for not being in the same pain as you

In my ICU we put a white rose on the nurses station when someone is passing to help signal the staff to please be quiet in that area. I think it really helps and we are still able to cope and go socialize or whatever in other areas on the unit.

This dude is like the epitome of a good person and a good humanitarian. Such a wholesome and good dude.

This is such a great clip man. The dichotomy of being the doctor and understanding the comedic relief we need sometimes to deal with the horrible things we see, but being the family member who could take that so wrong and become so offended. I so identify with this from my trauma days.

Doctors really are strong minded they go through alot of stuff and realize they can't save everyone so they cope in different ways, especially mike he was going through a tough time and was still able to pull through

It reminds me of that feeling you get when a loved one dies where it seems so unjust that the world keeps going despite your loss.

I think this why it’s important to have separate spaces for nurses and medical staff to unwind, and for families to to be told the bad news and to grieve, and never should the spaces be close together, or should one group of the chance to interact with the other. Dr. Mike shouldn’t have been able to go the nurses station when he is not acting in the capacity of a medical professional but instead as a grieving son. The medical staff should have done a better job of setting those boundaries between grieving family member and medical professional and protecting Dr. Mike from seeing those nurses laughing while he was grieving his mothers death.

Now it all makes sense why you are such a compassionate doctor.

That *bewhoop*ing sucks, man. I’m so sorry for your loss but I’m glad there was a silver lining of a teaching and learning moment.

You don't need to bear everyone's pain but you do need to be sympathetic/compassionate.

Such a kind and intelligent man to be so self aware and not hold a grudge. Lucky students who had him.

Dr. Mike is really good at understanding and explaining things from different perspectives. When I had a parent pass away in a hospital, I remember hearing a couple of nurses laughing in the hallway across. I remember initially feeling angry as to how people can laugh in an area where someone just died. Then realized they probably needed that coping mechanism of being able to talk and laugh. I changed my perspective to one of life resuming and going on after someone dies.

It is so underrated how strong Dr Mike is. Sharing his journey through losing mum has probably helped so many people. Such a good roll model.

Being a medical professional myself, this created such a beautiful insight for me. I think it is an exceptional reflection and learning for me.

When my Grandfather passed I went to the nurses station at the hospice to let them know we thought he was gone. They were socializing and when I came up the one who was on the same side of the counter as me said "what do you want?" Kind of gruffly and any thought of what to say just vanished.

She guessed what happened in a few seconds, asked me if he was gone and then just gave me the biggest hug as I started crying and the other nurse went to the room to help there.

Doctors and nurses have to be able to compartmentalize to be able to function.

There are times as a doctor that I've cried my eyes out after losing a patient. An 8 year old boy passed away after falling head first from a tree. What's horrible was that we did everything we could to keep him alive, and when the neurologist told us his brain was damaged beyond repair and we had to stop CPR, I couldn't hold back my tears. I cried as we were telling his family that there was nothing more we could do. Some cases are more painful than others, but with some, you kinda just get used to it. It's depressing honestly.

Dr. Mike seems like a gem. I 1st ran across his interview/conversation w/ well respected Dr. & he is so impassioned in his conviction & so not ready to be placated, not pacified in any way but still allowing space for the response. Firmly pushing for the truth. GOD I wish more people had conviction like this imagine... people in positions of power and authority; journalists, doctors, politicians, all government officials, etc.
